Spoiler warning! If you’ve not seen Chapter 13 of The Mandalorian yet, stop reading now, and go watch it.

In Chapter 13, “The Jedi”, we travel to the forest planet Corvus, where Din Djarin can find Ahsoka Tano, according to Bo-Katan. Not exactly sure what happened here, but the forest seems mostly dead, and the air doesn’t look to clean either.

The first scene on the planet is a battle between the forces of Morgan Elsbeth and the Jedi we came to find, Ahsoka Tano. Not a new species, as we’ve seen Ahsoka before, and we’ve also already seen a live-action Togruta in the form of Shaak Ti in Attack of the Clones. But cool nonetheless!

The forces of Morgan Elsbeth appear to be humanoids, although their faces are covered in gas masks. Since the inhabitants of the city Calodan aren’t wearing any, and neither are Morgan and her gun-for-hire Lang, I’m assuming the air is breathable (even though it looks foul). The subtitles also mention they speak in an “alien language”, and their basic (English) seems heavily accented. So I’m inclined to file them away as an “unknown alien species” for now (Mando sp. #20). They somewhat reminded me of the Kerestians from Solo.

Also roaming around on the planet are massive four-legged creatures, that feed themselves with the remnants of the trees. They can be seen in the background when Din lands on the planet, but he later uses his binoculars to zoom in on some of them, giving us a better look.

While searching for Ahsoka Tano in the woods, fans of The Clone Wars and Rebels may have noticed an owl-like creature sitting in the trees. This appears to be Morai, the Convor that functioned as Ahsoka’s spirit guide. You can also hear the call in this episode, using the same audio as the animated version. Another creature also returns, as we see two Tookas (or Loth Cat if you prefer) in the streets of Calodan.

After Din and Ahsoka meet, Ahsoka communes with the Child, who has a name! Grogu was trained by the Jedi in the Temple on Coruscant, but was taken away when the Republic fell. He’s been in hiding ever since, keeping his connection to the Force mostly secret. Ahsoka also mentions knowing only one other of it’s kind, master Yoda. At this point we don’t know what happened to Yaddle after The Phantom Menace, other than that she stepped down from the Jedi Council between then and the Clone Wars. At the time of Episode I, Ahsoka would have been around four years old, so it’s entirely possible she never knew who Yaddle was.

Not an alien species, but worth mentioning, the HK-87 assassin droids are based on an old concept for IG-88 by Ralph McQuarrie. The name indicates they may be related to the HK-47 and HK-50 assassin droids from Knights of the Old Republic. They also have the logo of the Seventh Fleet on the side of their head…

Near the end of the episode there’s a name-drop for Grand Admiral Thrawn, whom Ahsoka is apparently trying to find. This likely ties into the stories after Rebels, where Thrawn and Ezra Bridger disappear into the unknown. This is probably a set-up for another show though, and not something that The Mandalorian will focus on.

Din Djarin and Grogu part ways with Ahsoka, and continue their journey to Tython, an ancient Jedi world (which we know from the Expanded Universe, where it plays a big role in The Old Republic MMORPG). Stay tuned.
